Museum for Architectural Drawing, Berlin

The outer design of the museum references its usage: The facade is reminiscent of parchment and the arrangement of the floors are reminiscent of the drawers where the drawings are stored, stacked on top of each other.

The architect's drawing skills are becoming less important in the age of the digital drafting process. Architecture and the art of drawing still continue to be closely linked - outstanding architects are often also good drawers. In a collection unique in Germany, hand drawing from the genre of architectural presentation are on exhibit at a museum in Berlin. The curator of the collection has made it his task to make architectural drawings accessible to the public as an art form. The architects at SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov, located in Moscow, designed the exhibition building. Architect and drawer Sergei Tchoban, who lives in Moscow and Berlin, is the constructor and founder of the museum.

The building looks different to the observer from every new angle - the floors seem to be cuboids loosely stacked on top of each other, some of which protrude beyond the facade plane and are turned in on themselves. The building is constructed as a solid structure from colored concrete.

The yellow-gray color refers to parchment as a substrate for drawings. Reliefs clearly distinguish the individual levels of the cuboid structure. The imprints on the outer facade are reminiscent of drawings. The upper floor is designed as a glassed stacked floor and has a rooftop terrace. The building is meant to evoke the association with the drawers where architectural drawings are kept.

The elaborate design continues inside the museum. Optimum conditions for the sensitive exhibits are created through special lighting, lack of daylight and refined building technologies. The high-grade, reserved outfitting of the interior highlights the sophisticated architecture. White HEWI accessories combined with chrome elements are applied in the washrooms. A great deal of value is also placed on high-grade design in the barrier-free washroom. For instance, the support rails are chrome-plated and thereby completely integrate into the atmosphere.
