St. Antonius Hospital, Cologne

High-quality products, which assist patients in their independence, contribute to the feeling of well-being.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Cologne's St. Antonius hospital was founded more than one hundred years ago. The multi-wing building was built in the Neo-Renaissance style and, with 150 beds; it was the largest hospital in the southern part of Cologne. It was extended continuously. Block buildings were added in the nineteen fifties and seventies, creating a four-part, sectionalised ensemble. The original east-west wing and the hospital chapel are listed buildings. Over the years, the St. Antonius hospital has developed into a regional health centre and offers both out-patient and in-patient care.

In line with the hospital's guiding principle, "The focus is on people", it set itself the goal of making the patients' stay as pleasant as possible. This includes the medical care, the personal support as well as the fixtures, fittings and finishes in the patients' rooms. Safety, hygiene and comfort are important aspects in the design of the patients' bathrooms, which had to be taken into account in the structural alterations and extension of the nursing ward.

The high-quality fitout also lends the bathrooms in the optional services area a feel-good atmosphere. The accessibility products integrate into the design. The wheelchair accessible washbasin can be used conveniently and comfortably both in a seated and in a standing position, and are not immediately identifiable as an accessibility product. Integrated support rails provide a secure hold and make it easier to stand up. The generously sized shelf area provides plenty of space for bathroom utensils. An overflow was deliberately omitted from the washbasin. This and a non-porous surface make cleaning easier and increase hygiene. The walk-in shower was fitted with WARM TOUCH support rails to offer patients reliable support. The support rails are made of polyamide made with a chrome-look coating. This makes them particularly pleasant to grip, as they have a warm surface. Due to their chrome look they complement the accessories chosen made of high-gloss chrome. Functionality which gives patients security and high-quality fitout enable a comfortable bathroom in a timeless design.
