Children's centre Heining, Passau

The carers name the crèche "little birch forest" due to the birch tree trunks in the entrance area, which create the illusion of being in the middle of a forest.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Good child care and early encouragement for all children are among the most important tasks for the future. Need-based educational care offers support the development of children. Here child daycare centres, as a particularly flexible form of care, play a central role.

Kinderhaus Heining is made up of eight groups in total, in which care is provided for up to 170 children aged from 3 months to 12 years. The facility exists since 1960 and has been modernised continuously. In 2010, the basement was altered and a crèche for small children under three was set up. In the entrance area of the crèche is the so-called "small birch forest" ("Birkenwäldchen") – a cloakroom built from birch tree trunks. Behind that there are mirror walls, so that a whole forest seems to be created from the individual tree trunks. The use of natural materials draws through the entire  crèche like a "green thread". The architects commissioned to design the structural organisations, HM Zeilberger, chose natural rubber coverings and dark oak parquet for the floor.

A large part of the furniture was made from light-coloured wood, especially to the plans of the architects HM Zeilberger. Warm green tones are found on the walls and in the interior fitout.

Independence through child-compatible products

The entire fixtures and fittings are matched to the needs of small children. Cosy zones, the use of high-quality materials and a colourful design produce a feel-good atmosphere. The lighting concept consists of indirect lighting and plenty of daylight and emphasises the friendly, light ambience. The products used are chosen so that they are easy for children to use and thus encourage their independence. For example, in the sanitary room the washbasins are installed at a level suitable for children. The soap dispenser has a particularly large pushbutton, which is also easy for small hands to press.
